Welcome to Speculum Speculorum or mirror of mirrors, an AU Trio-Era Harry Potter Role-Playing Game. Here you will find the backstory for the game. For reference, the timeframe used in this game is 1995-1996; or, the Trio's 5th Year at Hogwarts.

A note before we begin. Dates do not correspond to real life dates. When the game begins, it will begin on the Hogwarts Express on its way to start the Trio's 5th year. Therefore, in game, we will not be specifying any dates, simply days of the week. All important holidays and events (birthdays, Halloween, etc.) will be announced at the beginning of the week in the OOC journal. In other words, time in game is different from time out of game. If you have any doubt about this, don't mention an important date, just stick to days of the week.

SPECULUM SPECULORUM

During the first war, Lord Voldemort's attempted rise to power, a prophecy is made:

The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches...Born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies...and the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal, but he will have power the Dark Lord knows not...and either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives...

In an alternate Harry Potter world, Voldemort chooses the young Neville Longbottom, whose parents, Frank and Alice, had, like the Potters, thrice defied the Dark Lord. When Voldemort arrived at the Longbottom's hiding place, he had no use for killing the Longbottoms, and instead made quick work of silencing them (after all, what could be more pleasurable than letting the Longbottoms see their son die and, as his servants, watch Voldemort rise to power). Voldemort then approached the baby, killing him. Unfortunately for Voldemort, the killing curse not only killed Neville, it also killed Voldemort, "for neither can live while the other survives".

The following day there is much celebration, at least outside of the Longbottom home, where Frank and Alice have lost their son. Distraught over this loss and unable to fully enjoy the defeat of Voldemort at the small hands of their son, Frank and Alice move away, disappearing deep into the Muggle world.

For the rest of wizarding society, there is cause for celebration. The Potters, thought to be the other family in the prophecy, can finally relax and rejoin their friends. The Order of the Phoenix, which stood strong against Lord Voldemort and his Death Eaters, can take a much-needed and well-deserved break. The world can now go on as it should, where good and innocence has defeated evil and corruption.

Some of Lord Voldemort's followers are found out and imprisoned in Azkaban for some time. With others, no proof could be discovered. Those witches and wizards must carefully assimilate back into wizarding society while trying to fight off rumor and fear.

Now, years later, a handful of Voldemort's most loyal followers have begun to come together, to meet in secret, seeking revenge against the Order of the Phoenix, against the Potters, against anyone who had a hand in destroying the Dark Lord. One of them, Bellatrix Lestrange, is prepared to do anything it takes to find a way to bring Voldemort back from the dead. Or, at the very least, create the world in which Voldemort hoped to live -- a world rid of Muggles, of Muggle-borns, and of Muggle sympathizers.

When Harry Potter and his friends begin their 5th year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, all is calm. Life is, as it has been for much of their lives, normal. But, all that can change in the blink of an eye. When Bellatrix Lestrange and the Death Eaters come knocking at your door, which side will you be on?
